Business grad Yashar Samim loves to eat and to save money, so he founded Baski, an app to help customers find grocery deals and build better meal plans.
- Name: Yashar Samim
- UVic degree: Bachelor of Commerce (BCom ’24), Gustavson School of Business
- My business: Baski
- Where it’s located: Victoria, British Columbia
- What we do: Baski is a grocery savings and meal-planning app that helps people find the best grocery deals, build smarter shopping lists and discover recipes based on what's on sale.
Our team is: Three founders with backgrounds in business, law and technology who share a passion for helping people make the most of their grocery budget.
Why we’re unique: We don't just show grocery flyers, we help people turn the week's best deals into practical meal plans and shopping lists, making it easier to save money while eating well.
Our ideal customer is: Anyone looking to save money on groceries, from students and young professionals to busy families.
Our business mantra: Helping people eat well for less.
I wasn’t expecting… How passionate people are about sharing grocery deals. Some of our best ideas and features have come directly from conversations with users.
Right now, our biggest challenge is: Building awareness. Grocery prices affect everyone, and we're focused on making sure more people know there's a simple tool that can help them save.
We’ll know we’re successful when: People across Canada think of Baski as part of their weekly grocery routine and tell their friends, "This app helped me save money."
Where to find us: Online or Google Play store.
Bottom line: My two favourite things are eating and saving money, so building Baski felt like the perfect combination.
