Transfer & exchange credit

Courses taken at other post-secondary institutions or through Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) will be evaluated for transfer credit and may be applied toward your UVic degree.

Courses taken prior to attending UVic

Transfer credit will be assessed upon admission to UVic. As a newly admitted student, if you have questions about how your transfer credit was evaluated, please contact your admission assistant.

Courses taken while attending UVic

If you plan to take a course at another institution while you are attending UVic (or between terms, like in the summer), you must submit a Request for Letter of Permission before you register for the class.

Your request will be reviewed, and you will be notified which transfer credit you will (or will not) receive. As a current UVic student, if you have questions about how your transfer credit was evaluated, please contact your records officer.

How to get transfer credit

You will need to arrange for official transcripts to be sent to UVic by the institution you are attending. You can usually order transcripts online from the institution’s Registrar’s office to be sent to UVic. However, transcripts can also be issued directly to you as long as they are in an official sealed envelope (do not open it prior to submitting it to UVic!).

Arrange for your post-secondary institution to send your official transcript electronically to UVic.

Exchange credit

Courses you take through UVic’s exchange program are considered UVic courses and count toward residency requirements. Once UVic receives your final transcript from the partner institution you attended, exchange credit will be evaluated and reviewed for use toward your degree program. For more information about exchange, please visit International Centre for Students.

Keep in mind

Timing

If you take a course at another institution near the end of your degree, you must ensure that the transcripts arrive at UVic on time. We encourage you not to take a course elsewhere during your final term at UVic, as you may not be able to complete the course and submit transcripts in time to be eligible for graduation in the term you wish to graduate.

Disclosure

If you have completed coursework at another post-secondary institution, you must submit transcripts to UVic. You cannot choose to decline transfer credit. If you do not submit official transcripts or if you attempt to conceal coursework from another institution, we will consider this failure to disclose.
