Strategic Framework Experiential Learning Fund (SF-ELF)

At UVic, hands-on experiential learning is an essential part of the student experience. To support students as they pursue community-based learning opportunities, the university provides a range of funding opportunities for students and employers both in Canada and abroad.

Funding is available through Faculties for students traveling outside of Victoria for experiential learning opportunities:

Funding for students for internships and field schools outside of Victoria

A total of $55,000 in 2019/20 and $75,000 per year for 2020/21 and 2021/22 is allocated to UVic faculties to distribute to students participating in an internship program or field school outside of Greater Victoria.

For example, students can receive up to $1,000 for Canadian opportunities and up to $3,000 for international opportunities. All funds must be used by March 31 and cannot be used to cover tuition fees.

Selection will be based on the nature and relevance of the internship/field school, the applicant's GPA, and the applicant's financial need.

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are attending internships or field schools outside of Victoria as part of their degree program.

Funding for students for practica placements outside of Victoria

A total of $20,000 in 2019/20 and $22,000 per year for 2020/21 and 2021/22 is available to students participating in a practicum placement outside of Greater Victoria. These are primarily for Faculty of Education and Human and Social Development students.

Selection will be based on the nature and relevance of the practicum placement, the applicant's GPA, and the applicant's financial need.

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are participating in practicum placements outside of Victoria as part of their degree program.

Application deadlines are Nov. 15 (for spring placements), March 15 (for summer placements) and July 15 (for fall placements). For details, download the application package.


Other experiential learning funding opportunities

Additional funding for experiential learning initiatives are available for instructors, co-op students, and co-op employers. These funds are administered by other units on campus:

Funding for instructors to develop or expand experiential learning opportunities

Funding for the development and delivery of new or expanded experiential learning opportunities.

Funding for co-op students and employers

Funding Plan for a Wage Subsidy Program for Co-operative Education Not-for-Profits placements and Unwaged Entrepreneurial Work Term placements.

Total per year allocation = $125,000


Co-operative Education Placements: Non-Profit and For-Profit Organizations travel stipends.

Total per year allocation = $95,000

Funding for Indigenous co-op students and employers

Funding Plan for a Wage Subsidy Program for Indigenous Co-operative Education student placements with Indigenous community organizations.

Total per year allocation = $50,000


Funding Plan for the Indigenous International Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Exchange Program.

Total per year allocation = $80,000
