Missing class

If you're sick, it's very important that you stay home. You may also need to stay away from campus if you're waiting for the results of a COVID-19 test or a close contact is ill.

Some things to know if you have to miss class:

  • Contact your instructor(s) as soon as possible to let them know about your absence.
  • Check Brightspace or ask your instructor(s) if they have PowerPoints, recordings or other materials available for classes you've missed.
  • Ask classmates if they can share notes from any classes you've missed.
  • This fall term, because of COVID-19, you do not need to provide a medical note to your instructor as proof of illness, regardless of the length of the illness.
  • Request an academic concession or deferral if you have to miss an exam or are unable to complete the coursework.

Course delivery

Most UVic courses are face-to-face this September.

We are offering approximately 100 online courses this fall for students who are unable to be on campus due to pandemic-related challenges. These are in addition to the courses already taught online pre-pandemic.

UVic will remain a primarily in-person institution. However, we have seen some benefits to online courses for both students and instructors. Faculties and departments will decide how to deliver future courses based on course and program requirements. The focus of these decisions will be creating the best possible academic and graduation outcomes for our students.

Check out the Winter Session 2021/22 timetable to learn which courses are online, face to face or a blend.

UVic is planning in-person convocation ceremonies for Fall 2021 graduating students. Ceremonies will take place in the Farquhar Auditorium in mid-November.

  • the number of students and invited guests per ceremony will be reduced
  • graduands, guests and volunteers must follow provincial and university safety protocols, including wearing masks indoors and showing proof of vaccination
  • you'll have an opportunity to receive a Grad Box if you can't attend a ceremony

On-campus housing

Students living in housing must be partially vaccinated by Sept. 7 and fully vaccinated by Oct. 24. UVic staff will follow up with you to ensure you receive both first and second vaccinations by these deadlines.

Residence Services is working hard to ensure on-campus housing is safe with robust COVID-19 guidelines around masks, self-isolation, off-campus guests and more.

International students

If you haven’t already applied for a study permit, you will need one to study in Canada. Even if you are starting your program online outside of Canada, we recommend applying for your study permit as soon as possible because the application process can take weeks or even months.

UVic students required to self-isolate can access our self-isolation program for help arranging accommodations, necessities and supports.
