Faculty bio
Dr. Ioanna Anastasopoulou is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria and is affiliated with the University of British Columbia's School of Audiology and Speech Sciences. After practicing as a Speech-Language Pathologist in Greece she completed her PhD in Cognitive Science at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, and subsequently a postdoctoral research fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. Her research bridges neuroscience, speech science, and clinical practice to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying speech motor control.
Her research aims to understand how the human brain plans, coordinates, and executes speech movements. Using neuroimaging, articulatory motion tracking, and behavioural methods, her work investigates the neural control of speech production in both neurotypical individuals and people with speech motor disorders, particularly apraxia of speech. A major goal of her research is to identify objective neural and behavioural markers that improve our understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of speech disorders while advancing fundamental knowledge of human speech motor control.
