Credentials

BA (RU), MSc (UW), PhD (UW)

Area of expertise

Atmosphere-ocean-ice interactions, coupled climate dynamics, climate variability and change, polar climates, climate sensitivity, radiative feedbacks

Background

I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria on beautiful Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia.

I am a co-chair of the Polar Climate Working Group of the Community Earth System Model, whose development hub is at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, USA.

Research focus

I research the physical climate system, particularly the myriad of interactions between atmosphere, ocean and ice that give rise to the Earth’s climate. I am especially interested in the ever-evolving climate of the polar regions, both Antarctic and Arctic, as well as the large-scale transport of atmospheric water from equator to pole.

Prospective graduate students

I always appreciate hearing from prospective graduate students!

If you enjoy physics, mathematics and possibly Python, and are interested in applying these to the study of the Earth’s climate system, please get in touch: hansingh (at) uvic (dot) ca. If you’d like to work with me, please send me some information about your potential research interests, your transcript and your resume or CV.
