In Memoriam: Paul West

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Paul West, UVic Chemistry Professor Emeritus, on March 14, 2023. Paul contributed greatly to the department, to UVic and beyond in several roles over the years including as an Associate Professor of environmental chemistry in the department from 1969 to 2005, as one of the longest-serving terms as Director of the Environmental Studies Program at UVic, President of the Science Advisory Board for Contaminated Sites in BC and President of the Association of the Chemical Profession of BC. Paul was also an early advocate of Co-op Education at UVic.

Colleagues will remember how Paul’s tireless efforts over several decades have transformed the profession of chemistry and environmental work in British Columbia. He was a catalyst for the recognition of professional chemistry in British Columbia. Paul also cared deeply about environmental studies and balanced his environmental work with his position in the department of chemistry. Paul will be remembered for his foundational work in the fields of chemistry and environmental studies, his dedication to teaching and mentorship, and his love for his family.
