His ongoing dissertation project, supervised by Dr. Colin Bennett, is a study on how citizen identification systems in Ghana interact with Development and ideas of progress.

Smith is currently a graduate student fellow with the Centre for Global Studies (CFGS). At CFGS, Smith is focusing on how international development actors, pressures and logics shape the adoption and implementation of citizen identification systems in Global South countries.
