UVic visit to China
President Jamie Cassels and Carolyn Russell, UVic’s director of student recruitment and global engagement, arrived in Beijing in December 2018 to explore the renewal of the university’s agreement of cooperation with the China Scholarship Council.
Visit to Vietnam and China
One year after the launch of the International Plan, a UVic delegation led by President Jamie Cassels departs Oct. 10 for Vietnam and China. The official visit to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Shanghai will help accelerate the momentum of internationalization at UVic and deepen our connections in Asia.
Chinese student at home at UVic
Education graduate student Xiwen Wang had hardly strayed far from her hometown of Beijing before crossing the Pacific to attend graduate school at the University of Victoria. Now, since making that major leap, the 24-year-old is getting the most from the experience through involvement in her new community, which she happily calls home.
Neil Burton & China's future
I was immensely privileged to be invited to deliver this year’s Neil Burton Memorial Lecture, which honors the Canadian teacher, activist, editor and researcher, who had an impact on so many in Canada, China, Japan and beyond. I’m grateful to the Burton Memorial Lecture Committee, the Center for Asia-Pacific Initiatives (CAPI) and the Burton family for this honor—and particularly to the Burton family and friends for providing some of the pictures which I used in the lecture, delivered on Jan. 24.
2013 Victoria Leadership Awards
On Feb. 25 at the annual Victoria Leadership Awards (VLAs), 21 local heroes were honoured including Drs. Ana Maria Peredo and David Chuenyan Lai, recipients of the 2013 University of Victoria Community Leadership Awards.
The Nanjing Massacre: 75 Years On
On Dec. 13, 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army entered Nanjing, the former capital of the Republic of China. In the six weeks that followed, thousands of civilians and soldiers died, their bodies found later in mass graves around the city. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Nanjing atrocity. On Nov.16 and 17, the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives and the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies are holding a symposium on the Nanjing massacre. The symposium will look at the events of 75 years ago, and examine what they mean today for China, Japan, Canada and the Asia-Pacific region. Details and a full schedule: www.capi.uvic.ca
Chinese delegation visits campus
On March 15, Dr. Reeta Tremblay, vice-president academic and provost, welcomed Mr. Zhaoguo Wang, the Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress, to the UVic campus. Vice-Chairman Wang is one of the highest-ranking members of the Chinese government, and his visit recognized UVic’s strong and long-standing reputation in China.
Jason Zapantis
While many soon-to-be graduates are preparing to dive into job search mode, Jason Zapantis can rest easy. The mechanical engineering graduate has been employed by Victoria’s Silian Sapphire for four years, and is happily settled into his role as process engineer.
Chinese scholars visit Fine Arts
Six representatives of China’s Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA) visited the Faculty of Fine Arts on Oct. 5. In addition to a campus tour, a luncheon with representatives from UVic’s Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives and Office of International Affairs, and a lecture by GAFA scholar Wu Yangbo, there was also an exchange of gifts and the signing of a memorandum of understanding to pursue future student and faculty exchanges. “I am very hopeful that we can forge a strong relationship with GAFA that will provide our students with the opportunity to study in China, and our faculty the chance to learn about Chinese art practices from visiting students and faculty,” said Dr. Sarah Blackstone, dean of Fine Arts. GAFA is one of the top eight fine arts schools in China.

Canada-China renewable energy
Last month, UVic’s Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic) hosted the second annual Canada-China Clean Energy Workshop where 55 leading energy system researchers from across Canada and China got to know each other and explore collaborative research opportunities.
Pang: "Everything clicked"
Yuanjie Pang has always had a passion for science, but it wasn’t until he began studying electrical engineering at UVic that everything clicked. This career choice has proven fruitful—he completed his studies last August with a Bachelor of Engineering and convocated in November 2008 with the IEEE Victoria Section Gold Medal in Electrical Engineering, a handful of strong co-op work experiences, and a seat in UVic’s Masters of Engineering Program.
Clean energy partnership
In June, a team of University of Victoria researchers travelled to China to share insights with Chinese colleagues on emerging clean energy technologies.
Linguistics student off to China
Unlike many students returning to university this fall, Brittney O'Neill doesn't have to worry about covering her tuition. The third-year UVic linguistics student is heading to East China Normal University in Shanghai as BC's sole recipient of the 2010 Irving K Barber Premier's One World Scholarship worth $20,000.
