New cycling and pedestrian paths for Ring Road South

- University of Victoria

Construction is kicking off on a new two-way cycling path and separated pedestrian sidewalk that will connect University Drive with the engineering and computer science facilities. The project will take place in stages in conjunction with the engineering and computer science expansion project.

The section between University Drive and the Engineering Computer Science building is scheduled for completion in spring 2021. It will include pathway lighting and landscape improvements, new trees and Indigenous plantings to support the area’s natural ecology.

The design of the new pathway was developed following consultations with environmental professionals to maximize the retention of trees on the site. Any trees removed will be replaced by two or more new trees on campus. The university is also exploring opportunities to re-use the harvested timber in university projects such as the planned National Centre for Indigenous Laws. The university is committed to protecting and managing the ecological diversity of all natural areas on campus.

The Ring Road South project is part of the implementation of the 2019 Campus Cycling Plan. The Cycling Plan promotes active transportation and provides a vision for creating an All Ages and Abilities (AAA) cycling network on campus. The Plan was developed with extensive engagement and support from students, faculty, staff and visitors.
