The Ring is the University of Victoria’s community newspaper. Its purpose is:

• to advance the mission and objectives of the university as articulated in the strategic plan
• to inform members of the campus community about news and events of interest to them and
• to help build a sense of community among faculty, staff and students at UVic.

Weather puts focus on adaptation for buildings

Climate change affects the trends in temperature and precipitation that many regions in BC are already seeing and will see more of in the future: higher annual mean temperatures; increases in winter precipitation; and drier summers. These changes must be factored into building design to reduce risks to infrastructure and to people's health and well-being, climate experts say.

PhD biology candidate Amy Teffer from New England is one of more than six dozen authors, including UVic fisheries ecologist Francis Juanes, of a new study on the foraging habits of the world’s shark populations. She calls UVic “the obvious choice” for her doctorate.

A means to measure

How much does alcohol cost? Think beyond the price of a bottle of wine; how many deaths per year are due to alcohol-related colon cancer? How about hospitalizations due to impaired driving accidents? To calculate these costs, PhD student Adam Sherk developed the International Model of Alcohol Harms and Policies, or InterMAHP.

A literary twist on gaming

English students in a fifth-year digital literary studies course turned to literature and DIY culture for inspiration to create video games as part of their class. They created two indie games: a campus-based locative app for mobile phones and a 2-D children’s game.

The Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance partnered with UVic conservation scientist Natalie Ban and colleagues on two recent publications on the status of two marine species. Humanities grad helps revitalize Galician language

One could say that humanities graduate student Ildara Enríquez was born for her role as a linguistics researcher. Growing up on the Iberian Peninsula in the northwest region of Spain, Enriquez spoke her native language of Galician at home. At school, she conversed in Spanish.Both were official languages, but as a teenager, Enríquez made a decision.

On Aug. 16, while visiting the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, UVic doctoral student Clare Higgs was involved in the observation of the first recorded gravitational wave signature caused by a neutron star collision.
