Library Study Spaces for Spring 2021

The Libraries are offering a number of study spaces at BiblioCafe, on the Lower Level and First Floors of the Mearns Centre – McPherson Library, and at the Law Library.

Students currently attending Canadian post-secondary institutions can use the drop-in study spaces in BiblioCafé. You will be asked to present a valid student ID from a Canadian post-secondary institution to library staff when you arrive.

Study spaces in BiblioCafé

Forty-two individual study spaces are available in the BiblioCafé for student use, Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, and Sunday 9am to 5pm.

Study spaces are 2 metres apart and are available for 3-hour bookings.

UVic students can reserve a maximum of two library study space bookings per day.

Thirty-seven spaces are available for booking.

Monday to Thursday:

  • 8am to 11am
  • 11am to 2pm
  • 3pm to 6pm
  • Study spaces are closed for cleaning between 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Friday:

  • 8am to 11am
  • 11am to 2pm
  • 3pm to 6pm
  • Study spaces are closed for cleaning between 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Sunday:

  • 9am to 12pm
  • 1pm to 5pm
  • Study spaces are closed for cleaning between 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Same-day drop-ins are welcome if space is available.

Study spaces in the Mearns Centre – McPherson Library, Main and Lower Levels

121 individual study spaces, including computer workstations and individual study rooms, are available for UVic student use, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Study spaces are 2 metres apart and are available to book for 9am to 12pm or 1pm to 5pm.

Study spaces are closed for cleaning between 12:00pm - 1:00pm.

UVic students can book a maximum of two library study spaces per day.

One hundred and twenty-one spaces are available for booking:

  • 74 study desks
  • 36 computer workstations (32 with dual monitors)
  • 7 individual-use rooms for students who need to attend an online class while they are on campus
  • 2 microfilm scanner stations for individual use to view requested microfilm/fiche
  • 2 adaptive technology rooms for individual student use of accessibility software.

Same-day drop-ins are welcome if space is available. Other floors of the library will not be accessible.

Study spaces in the Law Library

Forty-five individual study spaces are available in the Law Library for UVic student use, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

Study spaces are 2 metres apart and are available for 3-hour bookings (either 9am to 12pm or 1pm to 4pm).

Study spaces are closed for cleaning between 12:00pm - 1:00pm.

Students can reserve a maximum of two library study space bookings per day.

Thirty-nine individual spaces are available for booking:

  • 29 study desks
  • 6 computer workstations
  • 1 adaptive technology room for individual student use of accessibility software
  • 3 individual-use rooms for students who need to attend an online class while they are on campus

Same-day drop-ins are welcome if space is available.

In the study spaces

  • Study spaces are for individual use only, with no group study permitted. Tables and chairs are not to be moved.
  • Power sources within the study space are limited. We recommend bringing fully charged devices as you may not have access to an outlet.
  • Do not leave your belongings unattended.
  • Washrooms are open for your convenience.
  • Food services in BiblioCafé are unavailable until further notice.
  • No food is allowed in the Law Library; drinks in covered containers are permitted.
  • Study spaces are vacated and cleaned for an hour each day (2:00pm-3:00pm at BiblioCafé and 12:00pm-1:00pm at the Mearns Centre - McPherson Library and Law Library). Items cannot be left in the area.
  • If you have any questions while in the study space, please ask the library staff on duty in the area.
  • Check out with library staff before exiting the study space.

How to book a space

You will need the following information:

  • the location and type of space you want to book
  • the time slot you want to book
  • your email
  • your phone number

You will receive an email to confirm that your space has been booked. We will be responding to requests Sunday-Friday.

Bookings can be made 3 days in advance. Only two bookings per day. Same-day drop-ins are welcome if space is available.

Guidelines for safe study

Before coming to the library

  • Complete a daily health screen BEFORE leaving your home. If you are sick, cancel your booking.
  • Do not enter the library if you:
    • Have any new or worsening sympons of COVID-19
    • Have travelled outside Canada in the last 14 days
    • Have been identified by Public Health as a close contact of someone with COVID-19
    • Have been told to self-isolate by Public Health
  • Masks are required at all times, including when seated in a designated study space. Exceptions include when consuming food or beverage.
  • Bring your UVic ID and check-in with staff at the library front door.
  • If you are 30 minutes late, your booking will be cancelled.
