Area of expertise

ATWP 135, ENGR 120

I have been an instructor with the ATWP since 2018, teaching ATWP 135: Academic Reading and Writing; ENGR110: Design and Communication I (academic writing); ENGR120 Design and Communication II (technical writing); ENGR 240: Technical Writing. I have also taught business communications online at the University of Waterloo. I work hard to ensure my classroom is a safe and engaging space, where ideas and concepts are discussed inclusively. I use applied examples from my students’ varied programs to show how widely their writing skills can be put into action. My constructivist approach enables students to develop a strong understanding of the typical components of academic writing, but in a way that meets students at their varied levels and abilities. That is, I ensure that the distinct learning needs of each student are met.

I bring my practical experience as a writer for radio stations, marketing companies, and community organizations to the business writing classroom. Students have said they not only appreciate my experience but also the professional manner with which I communicate with them. To me, we are part of a team, much as they would experience in the workplace, striving to reach a goal. They are students as well as future colleagues with which I am working. Therefore, I lead my students by setting a good example of what professional communication looks like in practice.

I have a Master of Arts (MA) in English (Experimental Digital Media) from the University of Waterloo. This crowns my extensive portfolio of video and film projects and an active history of writing and producing film and video productions. I am also fully digitally literate with an adept understanding of the production and presentation needs of digital media formats for distribution throughout websites and social channels. As an accomplished communicator, I have designed and implemented persuasive external and internal communications plans and publicity and marketing materials to promote organizational programs and services. Over the years, I have developed material for Shell Oil; the Government of the NWT; the Calgary Stock; the United Way; the BC Special Olympics and others.
