Nimród Student Mobility Award
This award is being established by the Estate of the late Theodore Tivadar Szamecz. Theodore, also know as Tibor, passed away in Victoria on September 15, 2015 at the age of 86. Predeceased by his beloved wife Katalin, he is greatly missed and fondly remembered by his relatives and friends in Hungary as well as many close friends and acquaintances in Canada. He was born in Miskolc, Hungary and came to Canada in 1956 after the Hungarian Revolution. Being young, he had no problems adjusting to life in Canada and worked in the BC Ministry of Forests until his retirement. He had an outgoing personality, a great sense of humour and a love of life. He was an active member of the Hungarian Society where he could always be counted on to help at many activities.
A note about the award name: King Nimród is considered the forefather of the Hungarians. According to legend, his wife, Enéh, gave birth to twin brothers Hunor and Magyar. Father and sons were prodigious hunters but Nimród especially is the archetypal, consummate, legendary hunter and archer. Both the Huns’ and Magyars’ skill with the recurve bow and arrow are attributed to Nimród.
