BME lab closer to marketing drug-screening tool

2019 September — New funding will support Stephanie Willerth’s lab both in commercializing its “neuro-bioink” product and in licencing a drug-screening tool for Parkinson’s disease.” The Michael Smith Foundation and Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute are co-funding the award, which will enable Willerth’s lab to branch out into the additional research area.

Hackathon to find tech solutions for healthcare issues

2019 September — Interested in finding ways to solve some of society’s most pressing healthcare challenges? Head to this Friday’s (Sept. 6th) kickoff to the second annual Victoria Health and Regenerative Medicine Hackathon. During the hackathon, interdisciplinary teams will develop innovative technological solutions to real challenges posed by the local health sector.

Faculty welcomes hundreds of new students

2019 September — First-year Engineering and Computer Science students received an encouraging welcome and some words of advice during their first day on campus. After starting their day at UVic's quad and CARSA with other faculties, and a barbeque lunch, about 270 Engineering students and 104 from Computer Science gathered in two lecture halls in the Engineering/Computer Science building.

Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, Mitzi Dean, visits CoderGirl camp

2019 July — UVic's Science Venture program hosted Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity, Mitzi Dean, at CoderGirl on July 24th. These week long camps, designed for creative girls who want to use technology to change the world, give girls the chance to discover the world of code, building critical computer science skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Large growth in computer science and engineering graduands warrants own Faculty ceremony at 2019 Spring Convocation

Forging prosthetics from plastic for a pittance

2017 January — In a small, windowless lab in the University of Victoria’s faculty of engineering complex, prosthetic hands dangle from a peg board. These prototypes – produced with a 3-D printer and a few nuts and bolts – have launched a program that provides patients with customized, working hands in the most impoverished communities around the globe.
