ABSTRACT

While today's web carries information that can only be interpreted by humans, the seman-tic web of tomorrow will be understandable by computers. There are many competing and evolving proposals for the knowledge representation mechanisms to be used. In this talk, I will explain the main ideas behind knowledge representation and introduce the ba-sic elements of the semantic web forerunners: XML, RDF and XTM. Through an analy-sis of the fundamental concepts underlying all three technologies, I will propose a com-mon object-oriented model that can be used to integrate information from otherwise in-compatible sources.

The talk will focus on the big ideas without getting bogged down in too many implemen-tation details. There will be plenty of examples, but no demos. Knowledge of UML static models (class diagrams), the principles of object-oriented modeling, and some XML, would be useful to follow the discussion.
