ABSTRACT

Abstract:

In wireless multihop ad hoc networks, the use of the RTS/CTS mechanism does not completely eliminate the hidden-terminals problem. Consequently, considering the hidden-terminals problem add more complexity to the existing analysis found in single-hop networks. In this paper, we provide precise and accurate analytical models for quantifying the throughput and delay in wireless multihop ad hoc networks. The proposed analysis is applicable to many wireless MAC protocols and applications. The results of our analytical models are compared with extensive NS-2 simulation results in which they show a good agreement. Using our analysis, we show how the throughput and delay in wireless multihop ad hoc networks are affected by the hidden-terminals. In addition, we reveal how the transmission and interference ranges of the wireless devices affect the network performance. These results are important for network planning and protocol optimization in wireless multihop ad hoc networks.
