ABSTRACT
Abstract
Conventional practice in optical networking has information transported as light and switched as electrons. However, the natural currency of optical networks is light and suggests that transparent optical switching with photonic crossconnects may be the natural means of routing information. This talk explores the value of transparent networking and the interdisciplinary engineering challenges faced in creating a suitable photonic crossconnect based on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology.
