Abstract:
It has now been 10 years since turbo-codes were first introduced to the communications and coding communities. These codes provide remarkable performance for reasonable decoding complexity.
In this seminar an introduction to turbo-codes will be given. This will start with some historical context for turbo-codes. The general structure of the encoder will then be introduced, and the main components will be discussed, namely the constituent code encoder and the interleaver. The turbo-code decoder will then be described, with a focus on the MAP algorithm for decoding the constituent codes, and the iterative decoding process. Where appropriate, illustrative examples will be used to better explain the material.
