ABSTRACT

This talk describes the implementation and usage of a knowledge-based system, called Shrimpbib, for organizing knowledge in small academic groups. We describe each step in the planning, implementation and maintenance phases of the system. We describe how we integrate knowledge about group organization and academic documents from several sources within a system to capture and explore this knowledge. The tool consists of a repository for paper references and an ontology to capture additional information about group organization and opinions. A lightweight web-based interface for populating the knowledge base and a visualization tool allows users to explore existing knowledge and discover new relationships. We also discuss many of the barriers faced when creating the knowledge based system, and include recommendations for tool support that will assist both knowledge engineers and domain experts attempting to create and use similar systems.
