ABSTRACT

Abstract

The talk is concerned with new interpretations of the FDTD dispersion characteristics. The effects of non-uniform meshing and point sources are considered. It is shown that non-uniform meshes give rise to amplitude errors associated with numerical reflections and/or attenuation. Point sources as applied in eigenvalue and radiation problems may violate the Gauss law and give rise to statis spurious modes. Simple recipes for suppressing those errors, enhancing the order of FDTD supra-convergence, and restoring the physical solutions are proposed and validated. The theory of S- and P-eigenmodes of the FDTD method is also briefly presented.
