Welcome to the Education Commons and computer labs!

The Education Learning Commons is open for individual and group study 8:30am-4:30pm (usually a bit earlier and often later depending on when we get around to closing.) During "Priority Bookings", the Commons remains open for drop-in but we ask that you respect the "Priority Bookings" needs.

The Faculty of Education computer labs - MacD211, MacD282, MacA323 - are here for you! The teaching labs (MacD211 and MacD282) are available for drop-in use outside of booked class times. After hours access is available for Education students or students currently registered in an Education course; contact us to get your OneCard activated.

Quick links:

Education Learning Commons (MacD201)

  • A bright, open study space with a variety of tables (some moveable), computer stations, and bean bag chairs! Excellent for individual and small-group study.
  • May be used for special "Priority Booking" events; space remains open for students during these events.
  • Open for general access from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday (but usually a bit earlier and often a bit later depending on our availability.)
  • Media equipment: two 70" monitors mounted at side tables in the main Commons area available for student/small group use.
  • Two meeting rooms (available for drop-in use when not booked):
    • MacD204: Seats up to 14-16 people. 70" monitor with Mac Mini (Netlink ID login) on mobile stand; can be setup for full Zoom sessions with HD Logitech webcam and area mics (contact us for setup.)
    • MacD304:  Seats up to 12 people. 70" monitor with HDMI cable input.
    • Meeting rooms are bookable by Education staff, instructors and related student groups (EDSA, AGES, etc.) Contact us for more info or to book.
  • Whiteboards are located throughout the Commons and meeting rooms (pens not supplied.)
  • Printing available.

  • Borrowers agree to pick up and return all equipment to and from the Education Lab Support Office at the agreed time(s) in consideration of other borrowers who are depending on the equipment.

Notes and Manual

  • We recommend recording in high-quality AVCHD, and then using a free software to compress the file. Handbrake - https://handbrake.fr/
  • The recording time limit in MP4 is 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can loan an iPad to record web videos (instead of a video camera with MP4), as iPads have good HD cameras

Pairing Porcess

HERO4 Black & Silver Pairing Process

1. Open the GoPro App:
    - From the home page, tap the icon in the top left corner.
    - Tap on "Add A Camera" (iOS), "Camera" (Android)
    - Tap "HERO

2. Pick up your camera:
    - Hold the Mode button to power on your camera.
    - Press the Mode button until you highlight "Setup, then press the shutter button to select it.

3. On the app, tap "Continue."

4. On the camera, complete these steps:
    - Press the shutter button twice to turn on Wi-Fi.
    - Press the Mode button to highlight Pair, then press the shutter button to select it.

5. On the app, tap "Continue."

6. On the camera, press the shutter button to select "GoPro App."

7. On the app, complete these steps:
    - Tap Continue.
    - Enter the PIN listed on the camera's LCD screen, then tap Pair.
    - Enter a name and password for your camera.
    - Tap Update Your Camera.

8. Tap your camera name to connect to the cameras Wi-Fi network and you are all set!

ZOOM H2 - digital audio recorder

Specifications:

Use Zooom H2 as a USB microphone

  1. Plug the H2 into a computer using the USB to miniUSB cable
  2. Select "Audio" from the options on the H2 screen
  3. Select "Connect" using the skip forward button to highlight your choice
  4. Press the red record button to confirm your choice

Use Zooom H2 as a recorder

  1. Turn on the H2
  2. If possible use the supplied power cable to plug it in, otherwise keep an eye on the batteries
  3. Press the red record button to select your levels, the red LED will be flashing
  4. Adjust the mic gain lavel (low, medium, or high) using the mic gain switch (righ-side panel)
  5. Press the red record button a SECON TIME to start recording, the red LED will be solid
  6. Press the red record button a third time to stop your recording.

Transfer files from Zooom H2

  1. use the USB to microUSB to connect to computer while Zoom H2 is powered off
  2. choose STORAGE using the forward/backward buttons
  3. select your option by pressing the red recording button
  4. open the H2n drive that shows up on your desktop. You can also find it in "This PC" (Windows) or "Finder" (Mac OS X)
  5. there are 10 folders inside - your audio files are in one of those folders. If you recorded in 4 channels, your files are in the 4CH folder
  6. find your files, and copy them to your desired location on your PC or MAC

Tim Hopper's Ten Badges to Learn Google Drive

A Google account is a great way to access a number of services, including the Google+ social network, YouTube, Gmail, Google Drive cloud storage, and more. Better yet, a Google account is free! But all those free services won't do you much good if you don't know how to use them. This series of tips is designed to give you a "leg up" when learning how to get the most out of Google Drive without providing step-by-step instructions. Track your progress by earning ten badges on subjects such as organizing your Drive and sharing documents with other Google users, and become a proficient user in Google Drive.
