July 23, 2013 - Mr. Hannan Lohrasbi, a PhD student in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was close to winning the under 75 kg Weight Class at the World Semi Contact (kickboxing) point fighting championship which he won last year. Unfortunately, he was awarded second place due to injury sustained in the semi final match. The championship was held June 12-16, 2013 in Barcelona, Spain. Over 350 athletes participated in this world championship. As a result of his success, he has been invited to take part in the knock down championship to be held in Greece in October 2013.

Two days before the championship, Hannan presented two papers at the IEEE Oceans Conference which was held in Bergen, Norway. His research is in underwater signal processing under the supervision of Dr. Aaron Gulliver. Because of train delays, Hannan missed his sleep and the scheduled first match. Fortunately, the organizers agreed to a rescheduling of the matches.
