Campus traffic survey 2014

A comprehensive survey of campus traffic for a typical weekday period was conducted by Bunt and Associates Engineering in October 2014. Similar surveys have been conducted since 1992, with the last one in 2012. To ensure consistency with the previous surveys, the approach and methodology was largely replicated. The various surveys and data collection took place within the period from October 20 through to November 2, with the manual counts carried out on October 22 and 23, 2014.

The modal split numbers have largely stabilized since 2010 and changes for the most part from the 2014 survey were minor. Total automobile trips remain in the 50% range, with transit’s share remaining the same at 27.1%. The modal split share for pedestrians (15.7%) and cyclists (7.7%) were both largely unchanged.  The overall conclusion is that there have been no significant changes in the modal share results for several years.

The Traffic Survey provides up to date supporting information for parking management purposes and the planning for new developments on campus. It also assists in the liaison with Oak Bay and Saanich on new capital project approvals and the discussion on roadway, traffic, cycling and parking issues. The Campus Plan update process in 2015 is also a forum in which planning for the future transportation needs on the campus will  be undertaken.
