Getting to Victoria
Victoria and the University of Victoria is situated on the southern tip of Vancouver Island off the southern coast of mainland of our province of British Columbia, the western province of Canada.
There is no fixed connection from the island to the mainland and as such is only accessible via passenger/vehicle ferry services or air.
By sea
- Regularly scheduled ferry service from Vancouver and Washington state.
By air
- Victoria International Airport serves flights from Vancouver, Seattle, and many other locations.
- Float planes connect with Seattle and Vancouver.
By ground
- Bus service from Vancouver and Seattle (via ferry service).
- Rail service between Victoria and Courtenay. (Currently not running.)

Directions from:
Driving from Vancouver
Take the Swartz Bay ferry from Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. The sailing takes 1 hr 35 minutes, plus 15 minutes offloading time.
As you exit the ferry, you will be on the Patricia Bay Highway #17 south. After approximately 25 minutes, take the McKenzie Avenue exit. Turn left onto McKenzie Avenue and continue for 7 km. Turn right onto McGill Road, at the main UVic entrance, just in front of Centennial Stadium.
From Victoria International Airport
Victoria Int'l Airport is located off Highway 17, about 30-40 minutes north of the university. When driving from the airport, follow the signs to Victoria; they will lead you south onto Highway 17. From here follow the directions above.
The AKAL Airport Shuttle Bus offers service from the airport to various downtown locations, including UVic. Buses leave the airport every half hour between 4 a.m. and midnight, 7 days a week
From Nanaimo/up-island
Take Highway 1 south towards Victoria until you reach the McKenzie Avenue/Admiral Road intersection. Turn left here. Follow McKenzie Avenue for about 7 km east, until you reach the traffic lights at Gordon Head Road. Go through the traffic light and turn right onto McGill Road.
From Sooke
Follow Highway 14 east towards Victoria. In Colwood turn onto Highway 1 to Victoria. At the McKenzie Avenue/Admiral Road intersection, turn left. Follow McKenzie Avenue for about 7 km east, then turn right onto McGill Road, just in front of Centennial Stadium.
Ferry from Seattle and Port Angeles
You will dock in Victoria's inner harbour. Follow Belleville St. east to Blanshard St. Turn north onto Blanshard, and follow it for about 5 km then turn right onto McKenzie Avenue and continue for about 7 km. Turn right onto McGill Road, just in front of Centennial Stadium.
Ferry from Anacortes
You will dock in Sidney, about 30 km north of the university. Follow the signs to Highway 17 (Victoria). Turn left/south onto the Highway. In approximately 20 minutes take the University of Victoria/ McKenzie Avenue exit. Turn left onto McKenzie Avenue then continue for approximately 7 km. Turn right onto McGill Road, just in front of Centennial Stadium.

UVic is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for students, employees and visitors. Beginning September 1, 2011, smoking is only permitted in designated areas outside Ring Road. Look for the marked benches and new cigarette receptacles in convenient and accessible locations within a three-minute walk of any campus building.

One new facility is currently under construction at the University of Victoria.
UVic's Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) will provide the best training and learning facilities possible for students, varsity athletes and other users as well as an opportunity for all community members to access UVic's athletics and recreation resources as well as specific services and research programs.
Site preparation began the week of Feb. 25, 2013. Completion of the first phase of construction is targeted for spring 2015.
