Why do I care where tools for learning store data?

Web-based technology and social media are increasingly used by instructors in university courses. When requiring students to use these technologies, it is important to do so in ways that do not contravene privacy legislation (FIPPA). This law prohibits instructors from requiring that students' personal information be stored or accessed on servers outside of Canada.

What do I do if a tool stores data outside of Canada?

If a tool stores data outside of Canada, you have two options: (a) pick an alternative tool which stores data inside Canada or (b) inform students that the tool stores data outside of Canada and provide them with options (e.g., use a moniker). How do I use this list?

Tools are loosely classified into categories according to how they are used in the classroom. Each category contains a list of tools that store data in Canada (e.g. UVic enterprise systems and others) and tools that store data outside of Canada
