Hands-on learning
There are many exciting experiential learning opportunities available through Global Development Studies (GDS). You can participate in field schools, study abroad, work internationally through co-op placements and earn course credit for volunteer work with community organizations or international development organizations.
You can explore/secure experiential learning opportunities relating to global development through the Centre for Asian-Pacific Initiatives and Co-op & Career Services at UVic. Some of these experiences are funded by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship and Global Skills Opportunity program.
New field school: Northern Thailand, May 2023
In May 2023, GDS with the Centre for Asian-Pacific Initiatives and the Department of Political Science, will launch a new field school that includes one week of intense classroom study and two weeks of experiential learning in Thailand.
This field school is unique in that priority will be given to those students who are typically underrepresented in overseas opportunities, and funding to cover the entire costs of the field school will be provided for up to seven students, and partial funding will be provided for another three students.
