New "2+2" international degree program in economics

The Ring

Students study abroad for all sorts of reasons—to gain cultural experiences or expand their personal views, for instance—and for some it will be to study economics at UVic. The new agreement allows Soochow University students who complete two years of study in Suzhou and then transfer to UVic’s economics program for the remaining two years to receive a double degree in economics from both Soochow University and UVic. This is the third “2+2” agreement between UVic and Soochow University; the first is in business, the second in chemistry.

Two weeks after launching its new International Plan, UVic strengthened its relationship with Soochow University with the signing of a third partnership agreement, to welcome 100 students every year from the university located in Victoria's Twin City Suzhou to study economics at UVic.

How to tag a tiger shark

This summer UVic geographer Phil Dearden assisted an international research team with the placement of the first-ever satellite tracking tag on a tiger shark in the Philippines' Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park—a UNESCO world heritage site—and is now tracking its movements in real time. Sharks play a crucial role in marine biodiversity and the new research will have significant impact on shark conservation in Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

New online inventory for Chinese Canadian artifacts in BC

The UVic database of Chinese Canadian Artifacts officially launches July 7 at the evening reception of an annual international conference, ISSCO 2016 in Richmond, BC, bringing together 300 scholars and researchers of the Chinese diaspora.

The internship program offered by the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives (CAPI) at UVic focuses primarily on migrant rights issues across the Asia-Pacific. CAPI has long-standing partners in India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Nepal and Bangladesh whose work focuses on migrant rights, refugee rights and trafficking issues.

An international career path in law

Anna Beatch doesn’t like to plan too far ahead, and that feeds her thirst for adventure. She likes a challenge, which is why she chose UVic Law after receiving her undergrad commerce and business law degree from the University of Alberta. “I wanted to challenge myself and push my boundaries,” says Beatch. “I also chose UVic Law because of the co-op program.”

Chinese Canadian Artifacts Project

The University of Victoria is taking a lead role this year in the Chinese Canadian Artifacts Project (CCAP) to establish an online inventory of Chinese Canadian artifacts held by local museums.
