Chancellor Honoured as Community Leader

Prominent lawyer, community volunteer and University of Victoria Chancellor Ronald Lou-Poy has been named recipient of the 2007 Leadership Victoria Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award, which honours outstanding long-term service in community leadership roles such as philanthropy, innovation, mentoring and career achievement, is presented by Victoria’s Leadership Awards. The awards program is a partnership between Leadership Victoria, the Rotary Clubs of Greater Victoria, and the University of Victoria.

“I am highly honoured to receive this award,” says Lou-Poy. “I would like to thank Leadership Victoria, the hundreds of volunteers who have helped me over the years and my wife for her support.”

“Ron is an outstanding example of an inspiring community leader who volunteers his time and energy to make our city and surrounding area a better place,” says Al Kemp, chair of the Victoria’s Leadership Awards.

A graduate of Victoria College, Lou-Poy is a senior partner in the Victoria law firm of Crease Harman & Company. His extensive involvement in the community and UVic includes two terms on the UVic Board of Governors (1972-74 and 1992-95) and a term as an original director of the UVic Innovation and Development Corporation.

He has held various positions with the Kiwanis Club, the United Way, Victoria Crime Stoppers and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. He is a Queen’s Counsel, an Honorary Citizen of Victoria, a recipient of the Community Service Award from the Canadian Bar Association (BC Branch) and a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. Lou-Poy was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from UVic in 2000, made a member of the Order of Canada in 2003 and a freeman of the Municipality of Saanich in 2006.

The Lou-Poy family supported construction of the Harry Lou-Poy Infant and Toddler Child Care Centre at UVic, named for Ronald Lou-Poy’s father, and the family created the May and Ron Lou-Poy Fund of Excellence in the Faculty of Law.

Lou-Poy will accept the award at the Victoria’s Leadership Awards fundraising luncheon and award ceremony on Wednesday, January 24 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort. The Vancity Youth Award, the University of Victoria Community Leadership Awards and the Rotary Community Leadership Awards will also be presented at that time.
