UVic moves up in global rankings

The results of the 2022 QS World University Rankings, released today, show that the University of Victoria continues to be a global leader, climbing 36 places from last year. Criteria for consideration in the ranking is stringent, with QS considering fewer than 2,000 universities of the estimated 26,000 institutions around the world for its ranking. This year, UVic moves into the top 25 per cent of those QS evaluates.

Citations per faculty member—considered by QS to be “the best understood and most widely accepted measure of research strength”—put UVic at number 120 globally. That’s a resounding validation of the vital impact UVic research has on the world through scientific, technological, social and artistic innovation.

International positioning and perspective is also a key feature of the ranking.  “Internationalization is a key part of modern higher education life,” according to the QS methodology, and UVic is among the world’s top 200 universities in both of the associated QS metrics: international students and faculty. UVic has longstanding strengths in international research, study, exchange and global partnerships—and in attracting top students and researchers from around the world. In 2017, the university strengthened its commitment in this area by adopting a new international plan that outlines the priorities, principles and strategies which will continue to build global perspectives, connections and experiences for our students and researchers.

In other rankings-related news today, Times Higher Education issued a correction to its 2021 Impact Rankings, which measure universities’ contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The adjustment ranks UVic at 16 globally in SDG 13—Climate Action.
