Student Experience of Learning (SEL) Survey
The Student Experience of Learning (SEL) survey, (formally known as the Course Experience Survey or CES) is a university-wide instrument used to gather feedback on the student experience for courses taken at the University of Victoria. The SEL is administered by the Division of Learning and Teaching Innovation (LTI).
SEL results may be accessed and used in different ways across the institution, including:
- by the instructor, in relation to course reflection and development;
- by the departments, as part of local approaches to understanding instructional practices and course delivery; and,
- by the University, for institutional-level planning and analysis related to learning and teaching.
Although it is recommended that instructors communicate with students in their course syllabus about how to provide helpful feedback on their experience, instructors will determine how they choose to share information about SEL in their courses. This may include outlining the purpose of the survey, how it is accessed and the timing of its availability. Decisions regarding encouraging participation, allocating class time, or providing reminders are at the discretion of the instructor and relevant academic units.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we change when the SEL is completed?
In some circumstances exceptions may be made to when or if the SEL may be completed by students. Exceptions include:
- during the Summer Session when the final exam is administered before the last day of class as listed in Banner;
- when student access to the SEL is difficult and therefore the survey dates should be adjusted to enable completion of the survey, or;
- courses are required but do not have credits associated with them in Banner and are lacking components usually associated with the SEL.
If you would like to improve your survey response rates, please contact us at asklti@uvic.ca for guidance on effective strategies.
Where can reports be accessed by Instructors and their chairs/directors and deans?
Instructor reports can be accessed at any time by going to your SEL dashboard and signing in using your secure UVic NetLink ID. Please be aware that when you are not teaching your access status will have changed. If you are denied access please contact selhelp@uvic.ca. Chair/Director/Dean reports can only be accessed through Microsoft Teams once permission has been provisioned via departmental SEL Admins.
Will the documents for past terms still be available for access on Microsoft Teams?
Yes, reports prior to Summer 2014 will still be available.
