Research partnerships

Indigenous Governance at the University of Victoria has a long history of affiliation and alliance with Indigenous peoples, academic research centres and traditional programs around the world. These associations have created research opportunities for our students, academic exchanges with our partner institutions and enduring relationships, commitments and supports.

Some of the many partnerships that support the work of Indigenous Governance faculty, students and the communities they serve are:

Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement (CIRCLE)

Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement is an Indigenous-led UVic research centre that provides resources and support for faculty, students and communities to undertake Indigenous research and related activities. The centre promotes culturally safe and appropriate research relationships as well as meaningful collaborations at local, regional, national and international levels.

CIHR BC Network Environment for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR)

The BC NEIHR will support Indigenous faculty and students across UVic and other BC universities to foster respectful, Indigenous-led research and knowledge sharing with community partners and to develop Indigenous research methods and approaches that incorporate local knowledge, traditions and expertise.

Indigenous Law Research Unit (ILRU)

The University of Victoria has established the world’s first combined Joint Degree Program in Canadian Common Law and Indigenous Legal Orders (JD/JID). The Indigenous Law Research Unit (ILRU) is a dedicated research unit at UVic's Faculty of Law committed to the recovery and renaissance of Indigenous laws

Indigenous language revitalization

For over 40 years, UVic researchers, instructors, students and collaborators have been deeply immersed in local and national efforts, working with Indigenous organizations, Elders, community-based researchers, language-revival specialists, community language experts and educators.

In UVic’s Indigenous language revitalization programs, students:

  • build their language proficiency
  • conduct research related to Indigenous languages
  • prepare themselves to be tomorrow’s teachers and interpreters
  • connect generations of Indigenous language speakers and educate future generations
  • curate oral histories, and create new dictionaries, videos and apps
  • develop curriculum and practical strategies for Indigenous languages to thrive and flourish

University of Hawai'i at Manoa

Indigenous Politics program

The Indigenous Politics program at the University of Hawai’i – Manoa (UHIP) offers comparative study of Indigenous histories, cultures and politics, grounded in the cultural and geographical specificity of Hawaiʻi nei.

Indigenous Governance has been engaged in a cultural and academic partnership with the UHIP since 2006 through:

  • student exchanges
  • co-teaching courses open to students in IGov and UHIP
  • linking with organizations and communities in Canada and Hawai'i addressing issues of Indigenous resurgence
  • appointing UHIP faculty as adjuncts so they can participate in IGov student committees and lead directed readings
  • exchange and discussion of ideas and approaches to Indigenous resurgence and nationhood
  • a collaborative publication of Everyday Acts of Resurgence: People, Places, Practices

Pacific Peoples’ Partnership

For over forty years, Pacific Peoples’ Partnership has supported the aspirations of South Pacific Islanders and Indigenous peoples for peace, environmental sustainability, social justice and community development.
