I am a new UVic employee. Which benefits can I enroll in?

  • It depends on your employee group, length of appointment and type of appointment.
  • You will receive enrollment forms through your onboarding if you are eligible to participate in UVic's group benefit plans.

I'm moving to BC from another Canadian province. How do I ensure I have provincial health coverage?

  • In order to be allowed to join the province's public health plan (Health Insurance BC Medical Services Plan), you'll need to satisfy their three-month residency requirement (balance of month of arrival, plus two full months) before you would be eligible.
  • While fulfilling the three month residency requirements, your prior province or territory of residence will continue to provide public medical coverage to you.

  • While fulfilling the three-month residency requirements you may consider purchasing interim medical insurance through a private insurer. A recommended insurer is Pacific Blue Cross.

I'm already enrolled in my spouse's/partner's benefits plan. Do I need to enroll in the UVic plan too?

  • If your spouse or partner's benefits plan allows dual coverage, you can add them and your dependents when you enroll into UVic's benefits plan.

Who is an eligible dependent for group extended health and dental coverage?

  • Your legal spouse or common-law partner (a common-law partner is a person who has been publicly represented as your spouse for at least one year).
  • Any child, stepchild, legally adopted child, or legal ward who is unmarried and dependent on the employee, and under age of 21 years (children under age 21 are not covered if they are working more than 30 hours a week, unless they are full-time students, or age 21 to 25 and in full-time attendance at a recognized educational institute. If child is no longer a student, the coverage will cease at the end of the month of finishing school or university, or incapable of supporting themselves because of physical or mental disorder are covered without age limit if the disorder begins before they turn age 21, or while they are students under age 25, and the disorder has been continuous since that time.

How do I get my group plan number for enrolling in CARESnet?

  • Check your Pacific Blue Cross ID card.
  • Check the online quick reference guide for your employee group.

How do I get my Pacific Blue Cross ID card?

  • Pacific Blue Cross will mail your ID card to your home address.
  • You can also print a copy after logging in to PBC Member Services.

Can I name my minor child as my beneficiary for life insurance?

  • Children that are legally considered minors may be named but you must also appoint a trustee on their behalf.
  • If you do not appoint a trustee, in the event of your death you children may have to wait until age 19 before the life insurance funds can be released.

How much are premiums for coverage in the university's group plans?

Is the employee and family assistance program (EFAP) a confidential service? Will my employer know that I am using this service?

  • This is an employer paid benefit which is completely confidential.
