MSW Advanced program
The MSW Advanced (MSWA) program is grounded in the commitment to socially just social work. The program is intended to broaden social work practitioners’ understanding of the social, cultural, political and practical implications of their work. It is offered through a combination of an on-campus institute at the beginning of the program and distance education.
Delivery method
The MSWA program is delivered primarily through distance education, except for a mandatory 5-day on-campus institute scheduled in the last week of August.
Students in the MSWA complete 15 units comprised of course work, and one of two completion options: thesis or course-based. For more information about the required courses and completion options, please see the Delivery method and course plan page.
Are you ready for graduate education?
Admissions to all of our MSW programs are highly competitive, and we particularly look for candidates who can evidence a “fit” with our curriculum, Mission Statement and Program Objectives. The MSWA program is delivered primarily through distance education, except for a mandatory 5-day on-campus institute scheduled in the last week of August.
Most graduate courses require about 9-12 (or more) hours of work per week per course. Graduate education, even if by distance, can never be done “off the side of your desk.” Time management skills are essential for success. Classroom-based courses typically involve three hours of instruction per week, plus an additional 6–9 hours for reading and assignment preparation. Online courses require approximately 3–4 hours per week for participating in discussions and original postings, with an additional 6–8 hours dedicated to preparing assignments.
Technology requirements
All students admitted to the MSW program must have a computer and high-speed internet access for the duration of their studies to participate in online courses and administrative processes. Students require a UVic Netlink ID. It is strongly recommended to use a UVic email address. For more information about distance education, please visit the UVic Learning Anywhere website.
