BCom specializations

This page is for students entering BCom Year 1 in 2025 and later. If you are a current BCom student or are looking to transfer into Year 3 in 2026, please refer to the course calendar for accurate specialization and course information.

In year 4 of the BCom program, you will be able to specialize in:

  • entrepreneurship and innovation
  • service design, marketing and management
  • financial management (either accounting or finance stream)
  • artificial intelligence and technology management 

Our specializations are unique and reflect the complexity of real-world workplaces. You'll gain knowledge of core business building blocks, leadership skills and management concepts, no matter which specialization you choose. But you'll learn these fundamentals in the context of an area of specialization.

All specializations have an immersive term in which you will complete 4 to 5 courses specific to your specialization alongside the same group of students. 

Entrepreneurship & Innovation

Whether you want to launch a startup or drive change inside an organization, this specialization will help you develop an entrepreneurial mindset and turn your ideas into impact.

Entrepreneurship is the creation of new value. That value can be economic, social or environmental, and in a variety of for-profit and social contexts. Innovation is at the heart of this process. You’ll go from identifying problems to generating solutions, potentially launching a venture and making a difference.

All students in this specialization identify and research a new business opportunity. In year 3, you’ll develop the knowledge and skills to identify and screen potential ideas. In year 4, you’ll build on this foundation by developing the value proposition, testing and launching your idea.

Hands-on learning

The best way to become an entrepreneur is through deliberate practice. That is why we designed this specialization with experiential learning opportunities, including an innovation project where you'll start and run a micro-venture.

Service Design, Marketing & Management

This specialization will equip you to lead and transform service-oriented businesses. You'll learn to manage people, processes, the physical environment and technology with a holistic systems perspective. By focusing on service excellence, you’ll gain the tools to design and deliver services that add value at every touchpoint. Building valuable relationships with customers and employees is at the heart of every successful organization.

Hands-on learning

You'll work on problems and develop solutions for real businesses. Collecting and analyzing data and developing recommendations based on service management principles, you’ll gain the practical experience you need to manage a service organization. Learn ways to deliver standout customer experiences and drive organizational improvement.

This is a 4-course specialization. Students must also take COM 400 alongside their service management module.

Financial Management

This option equips you with the tools to make smart financial decisions that drive organizational success. You’ll develop in-demand financial expertise that opens doors across industries.

Choose between two streams: finance or accounting. If you want to work towards a CPA or CFA designation, you’ll gain a strong academic foundation to help you get there.

Students in the accounting stream will develop an understanding of:

  • auditing principles, standards and practices
  • in-depth financial accounting concepts including measurement and reporting of assets, liabilities and equity items
  • fundamentals of the Canadian income tax system and tax planning techniques

Students in the finance stream will develop an understanding of:

  • corporate finance principles including capital structure and cost of capital
  • global financial management including foreign exchange
  • investment strategies and portfolio management

Hands-on learning

Gain valuable experience to launch your accounting or finance career through:

  • case studies that mirror real-world business scenarios
  • CFA/CPA preparation through coursework and advising
  • work experience terms that let you put your knowledge into action

Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Technology Management

This specialization blends business, technology and people-centred skills to prepare you for the future of work.  If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in technology, this specialization will give you the tools to build a meaningful career.

Whether you are interested in launching a tech-based venture or in solving modern business problems, you will learn how to use AI tools to lead in an ever-evolving digital world.

Hands-on learning

Gain practical skills to bring your ideas to life with AI and technology:

  • use AI tools to come up with recommendations while understanding the limitations and biases behind them
  • use AI to build your own apps and software products
  • gain experience in programming, and data acquisition, analysis and visualization
