Biography

Dr. Raveendra (“Ravee”) Chittoor, professor of strategy and international business, joined the Gustavson School of Business at UVic in 2015 bringing research interests in the emerging economies and the strategies of emerging economy firms and family-owned business groups. He has a deep understanding of factors that led to the rapid expansion of emerging economies including India and their emergence as significant players in the global marketplace. In addition, his recent research at the Gustavson School explores the trade-offs and complementarities between stakeholder strategies and competitive strategies.

Ravee’s research program is broadly focused on understanding how institutions and institutional environments shape the structure of the markets and the strategies of firms operating in those markets. This work provides insights for students studying strategy and international business; managers and leaders of global firms for whom emerging markets are becoming increasingly vital. He has a research affiliation with the Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Enterprise at the Indian School of Business (ISB) and is an independent director on the board of Prism Johnson Limited, one of India’s leading integrated building materials companies with annual revenues of more than $1 billion.

Ravee has won many awards for his research and teaching and his research has been published in top tier journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Global Strategy Journal, Management International Review, Journal of International Management and Long Range Planning.

Prior to joining the University of Victoria, Ravee taught at the Indian School of Business and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. Before moving to academia, he worked in the industry for over 12 years in organizations such as IBM, CRISIL (a Standard & Poor’s company) and Mumbai-based Rajan Raheja group in senior management positions.
