Biography

Kristin Brandl is an associate professor of international business at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria. She is also affiliated with the Gordon Institute of Business Science at the University of Pretoria and Copenhagen Business School. Dr. Brandl held visiting research positions at the Center for Emerging Markets at Cornell University, Fox School of Business at Temple University, and Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. She was also a visiting researcher at UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Division of Investment and Enterprise, and supported the World Investment Forum 2023. Before joining UVic, she was a lecturer/assistant professor at Henley Business School, University of Reading.

Dr. Brandl’s research studies the impact of (national and supranational) policy and institutions on global business environments and firm strategy. She is particularly interested in developing countries and how these internal and external policies and additional factors impact their development processes. She also examines global knowledge sourcing, especially related to service and innovation activities, i.e., international services management and innovation, with a focus on production processes, characteristics, structures, and value propositions (global value chains).

She is an area editor of the Journal of International Business Policy (JIBP) and an associate editor of the Journal of Industrial and Business Economics (JIBE). She is also the media editor of the International Business Review (IBR) and on the editorial review boards of the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) and the Global Strategy Journal (GSJ). She is the chair of the Academy of International Business-Canada Chapter (AIB-Canada Chapter) and board member and the Emerging Scholars from Emerging Markets Program (ESEMP) Lead at the Academy of International Business Emerging Markets-Shared Interest Group (EM-SIG). She has won several grants and awards for her research, for example, an SSHRC Insight Grant and an EliteForsk Stipend from the Danish Ministry of Research, Innovation and Higher Education.
