2025 Report to Donors
With your support, we are shaping the future.
It's a future where UVic grads are the leaders our world needs and healthcare is more accessible to all. A future where we've created sustainable solutions for and with communities. Where we've moved closer toward reconciliation through art and education. Thanks to your gifts, and your partnership, we’ve improved life for people at UVic and beyond.
This past year, we saw how UVic donors can come together to reach our shared goals. Each gift—each act of generosity—moves us closer to the promise we’ve made to contribute to the community, society and the planet. Here are some of the ways donors like you are making an impact.

Developing leaders for the future
Each year, the Science Emerging Research Awards empower graduate scholars like Moronke Harris and Ian Chagunda. Donors are enabling these dynamic next-gen leaders in science to take part in groundbreaking research, mentorship opportunities and public engagement that is moving hearts and minds.

Sustainable solutions for communities
An ambitious project funded by TD Bank aims to create a reliable, renewable and clean energy source for the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN). Harnessing the power of waves, abundant in the MMFN’s territory, will bring the Nation closer to its goal of returning to its traditional home on Nootka Island.

Health access for all
Jessica Newcombe received the Edson-Simpson Graduate Scholarship in Nursing, which not only provided financial support during her second year of studies at UVic but also reinforced a sense of excitement to contribute to community health in a new career. Now as a nurse practitioner at an urgent and primary care clinic in Esquimalt, she has found a role that blends her passion for the fast-paced energy of the emergency room with the opportunity to build lasting relationships.

Reconciliation through art and education
Donor support allows Smyth Chair in Arts and Engagement Dr. Andrea Walsh to undertake research, education and public exhibitions that uplift Indigenous art and artists. Over the past five years, the donor-funded chair position has created greater space for community-led research and advocacy in her work--spaces like the Visual Stories Lab.

Community coming together
Often it's not the size of the gift that counts, but the number of people contributing to one initiative. Here's a a look at three examples of the donor community coming together in this past year to make an oversize impact.

Paying it forward
Through Vikes Giving Day and the Vikes Championship Breakfast, Vikes donors are funding student-athletes and wrap-around supports like equipment and travel costs.
At the 2024 championship breakfast, the Vikes community raised a record-breaking $821,727 for athletic scholarships, helping reduce financial barriers for student-athletes so they can compete at their best. On Vikes Giving Day, you gave a total of $387,694 through 917 gifts. This means Vikes teams can participate in sports events and community initiatives.
Every year, Vikes student-athletes contribute thousands of volunteer hours. Their commitment to community is a reflection of the support they receive. As they chase championships and academic excellence, UVic student-athletes continue to give back—to the fans, families, and organizations who help them along the way.

Collective efforts for languages
The Pathways to Education Fund supports students and brings them closer to achieving their dreams and goals. Thanks to 317 donors to this fund, this year $110,000 will be distributed to learners through the Indigenous Language Revitalization Awards, supporting students from nine First Nations and helping reinvigorate local languages. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action highlight the need for increased funding and a collective effort to protect and renew Indigenous languages. With the help of our donor community, the university is heeding that call.

Sprinkling generosity on Giving Tuesday
A total of 760 donors gave $258,000 for 26 projects. Since 2016, the Giving Tuesday event has generated more than $1 million for programs and projects across the entire university—including student aid, clubs, community-outreach programs, EDI initiatives and much more.
The day of giving brings together students—who participate in games and designate donor dollars—and alumni from the around the world.
