Create a fund or award

Provide financial support to students through awards. Awards can be directed towards students from a certain community or group. Or, they could be for students in a specific program. Awards and funds can support field trip or travel experiences, or give students the opportunity to do research. Whatever your goal, our team will work with you to:

  • help you understand your options

  • walk you through the approval process
  • ensure your gift makes the impact you want.

Set up a student scholarship, bursary or award

Funding a student award is an impactful way to help UVic students realize their dreams. It can:

  • make a university education more accessible
  • open up different opportunities, like travel, field schools or study-abroad programs
  • allow students to focus more on their education than their financial stresses.

By establishing a student award you can:

  • support an area at UVic you care deeply about
  • help define the terms of the award
  • name the award in tribute of someone or something meaningful to you.

There are different ways to support students, through scholarships, bursaries and awards. You can fund these on an annual basis or through an endowment.

What you’re doing is making a big difference. What you’re doing is putting more people that come from hardship into positions of power so that they can help others, because they know what it's like. Annual funds

An annual fund provides annual support for a fixed period of time. The funds are not invested and will be spent down each year.

Create a new annual student award with a gift of $1,000 or more per year for a minimum of 3 years, spread out over quarterly or monthly payments.

Endowed funds

An endowed fund supports your award in perpetuity, using only the investment income generated by the capital. Your vision and gift(s) have far-reaching benefits, generating stable, long-term funding for the university.

You can choose the name of the fund, giving it your family name or in honour of a family member, friend or organization.

Create a named endowed student award with a gift of $25,000 or more. You can also build towards this over a five-year period. Once the fund balance reaches $25,000 it will become an endowed fund that generates investment income to fund the award.

Endowed gifts are invested by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Other types of funds

You can set up a fund for something other than a student award to support specific needs in any faculty, school, department, centre, research program or UVic Libraries. These funds can be also annual or endowed.

Some examples are:

  • a term research chair
  • an endowed research chair
  • a term professorship
  • an endowed professorship
  • a travel fund
  • a program fund
