One Heart for Reconciliation Award

Nancy Peck is a graduate of the University of Victoria Faculty of Law (Class of 1991) and was called in 1993. Now retired, she has public sector expertise in Indigenous property assessment and taxation law and legislation, reconciliation and revenue sharing agreements and treaty negotiation and implementation. This experience, coupled with events in Canada that exposed difficult truths, convince her of the importance of ongoing reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Nancy feels that UVic's JD/JID program is an excellent example of how the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous legal traditions and communities can change, become better and contribute to reconciliation. Nancy is hopeful that students receiving this award will use their legal training to farther the critical work being done on the journey of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people of Canada.
