Title of Talk:
Multi-scale modelling of composites in structural applications: Challenges and Opportunities

Short Bio:

Dr. Sardar Malek is an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Victoria (UVic), where his research focuses on developing advanced computational methods for the design and resiliency assessment of durable composite materials used in building and infrastructure systems across various sectors.

Before joining UVic in 2020, Dr. Malek served as an Assistant Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Australia. Earlier in his career, he was a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he studied the multi-scale mechanics of wood and contributed to the development of a novel bio-inspired material for lightweight structural applications.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Malek has pursued the overarching goal of developing efficient computational tools to better understand, analyze, and optimize novel sustainable structural composites, such as engineered wood and bamboo products. Beyond research and teaching, he has provided consulting services to leading firms across North America and Australia, advising on the integration of sustainable composite products in mass timber office and educational buildings.
