Title: Technology in Support of Science on the Coastal Margin
"The Hakai Institute (hakai.org) operates an ecological field station on the otherwise uninhabited Calvert Island on the BC Central Coast. Our mission is Long Term Ecological Research. Among many other things, we study the 7000 hectare watershed that drains into Kwakshua Channel. We monitor many factors—hydrology, biogeochemistry, microbiology, forest ecology--and we do so long-term and year-round.I will talk about Hakai’s use of remote sensing, including LiDAR, and the terrestrial sensor network and overall IT strategy we employ to support this mission."
