Fair dealing statement


 A fair dealing statement should be included with any material made available under fair dealing. The statement below can be used in course materials, PowerPoint slides, course outlines, etc. You can either:

  • Copy and paste from the text below, OR

This copy was made pursuant to the Fair Dealing Guidelines of the University, library database licenses, and other university licenses and policies. The copy may only be used for the purpose of research, private study, criticism, review, news reporting, education, satire or parody. If the copy is used for the purpose of review, criticism or news reporting, the source and the name of the author must be mentioned. The use of this copy for any other purpose may require the permission of the copyright owner.

  • Add a page to your existing pdf file, OR
  • Create a custom pdf stamp, using Adobe Acrobat:
    • Open a new blank Word document. Insert a text box. Copy and paste the fair dealing text inside the box that wish to use.
    • Size the box so it is the size and shape you wish to use. The “box” border will be recognized as the stamp perimeter. Save as a PDF to your computer.
    • In your Adobe PDF file, go to Comment > Annotations. Click the stamp icon and choose Custom Stamps > Create Custom Stamp.
    • Click on Browse and select the pdf stamp file.  Choose OK
    • In the next window, under Category > Dynamic. Then enter an easy-to-remember name in the Name field. Then click OK. This has created your stamp.
    • Now add your stamp to the document. Open the chapter or article you wish to stamp, as a PDF in Adobe.
    • Click Comment > Annotations and choose stamps icon. Navigate to Dynamic, select your image.
    • Click on the area where you want to locate your image. Now, your image is stamped onto your PDF file. Save your file.
