History
John S. Helmcken (1825-1920) was a physician who arrived in Victoria in 1850 to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company. He was elected to Vancouver Island’s first Legislative Assembly in 1855. He later served as speaker of the colonial assembly. Helmcken was one of the delegates who negotiated BC’s terms of union with the government of Canada.
RHE was built in 1969.
