TITLE: Beyond Listening for Black Holes: Getting down-to-earth with Gravitational Wave Technology
SPEAKER: Dr. Jong Chow, Australia National University
DATE: Friday, January 31, 2020
TIME: 10:30 – 11:30 am
LOCATION: ECS 660
Abstract: The dawn of gravitational wave astronomy was facilitated by the most sensitive instruments ever engineered in human history. These instruments are underpinned by cutting-edge technology to push the boundaries of precision measurement. Some of these techniques have evolved beyond gravitational wave science and find diverse potential applications such as mining, trace gas analysis and acoustic sensing. In my seminar, I will highlight some exemplars from my team at the Australian National University. I will describe our recent developments in fibre optic sensing, cavity enhanced molecular spectroscopy and multi-target acoustic sensing, all of which had their geneses in gravitational wave instrument science.
