Orientation Leader

Role summary

Orientation Leaders (OLs) welcome new undergraduate students to campus as part of New Student Welcome. As an OL, you will be responsible for groups of undergraduate students during New Student Welcome, facilitating icebreaker activities, guiding students through navigating campus spaces, services and resources, providing tips for success, sharing your experiences and creating connections.

Availability requirements

  • August 2022: Online self-paced training modules (4 hours)
  • Saturday, September 2: OL training (full day)
  • Monday, September 5* (Labour Day) and Tuesday, September 6: New Student Welcome programming (full day)

Time estimates are approximate and may vary slightly from actual hours spent

*We are still working to confirm exact program dates for New Student Welcome, and whether the program will be one or two days. We will update volunteers as soon as that decision is made!

Role expectations

Orientation

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students
  • Check-in your group members as they arrive
  • Provide a territory acknowledgment to your group
  • Facilitate ice-breaker activities to help create social connections between students
  • Guide a group of new students through all New Student Welcome activities
  • Encourage active involvement from all group members, ensuring no one is left out
  • Lead your group on a campus tour to introduce important spaces, buildings and services
  • Answer questions from new students and share tips and experiences gained during your time at UVic

Professionalism

  • Be a role model for new students
  • Maintain prompt communication with orientation staff
  • Set an exemplary standard of conduct at all times

Qualifications and core competencies

  • Be returning to UVic as an undergraduate or graduate student in Fall 2022
  • Have completed a minimum of one semester of study at UVic by May 2022
  • Be in good non-academic and academic standing
  • Exercise good judgement
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Passion for the student experience and community building
  • Must have the ability to engage in critical self-reflection and an understanding of the wide variety of different experiences, challenges and barriers new students may encounter when starting at UVic

How to apply

New volunteers

  • Complete the application form and submit by July 14, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. PT
  • After application review, selected applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual group interview process the week of May 16, 2022

Returning volunteers

  • Complete the application form and submit by July 14, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. PT. 
  • Returning volunteers do not need to participate in an interview process
