Graduate Tour Leader

Role summary

Graduate Tour Leaders (GTLs) welcome new graduate students to campus as part of Graduate Student Orientation. As a GTL, you will lead a campus tour for a group of graduate students during Graduate Student Orientation, introducing students to campus spaces, services and resources, providing tips for success, sharing your experiences and creating connections.

Availability expectations

  • August 2022: Online, self-paced training modules (4 hours)
  • Wednesday, August 30 (evening): In-person GOL training (3 hours)
  • Friday, September 1 (afternoon): Graduate Student Orientation (2 hours)

Role expectations

Tour leader

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students
  • Provide a territory acknowledgment to your group
  • Lead your group on a campus tour to introduce important spaces, buildings and services
  • Answer questions from new students and share tips, tricks and experiences gained during your time as a UVic student

Professionalism

  • Be a role model for new graduate students
  • Maintain prompt communication with orientation staff
  • Set an exemplary standard of conduct at all times

Qualifications and core competencies

Graduate Tour Leaders must:

  • Be returning to UVic as a graduate student in Fall 2022
  • Have completed a minimum of one term of study as a graduate student at UVic by Fall 2022
  • Be in good non-academic and academic standing 
  • Be able to exercise good judgement
  • Have strong communication skills 
  • Be passionate about UVic and the UVic student experience
  • Must have the ability to engage in critical self-reflection and an understanding of the wide variety of different experiences, challenges and barriers new students may encounter when starting at UVic

How to apply

New volunteers

  • Complete the application form and submit by July 14, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. (PT).
  • After application review, selected applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual interview the week of May 16, 2022.

 Returning volunteers:

  • Complete the application form and submit by July 14, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. (PT). Returning volunteers do not need to participate in an interview process.
