WordsThaw 2014
The Ring
The campus will be teeming with lit lovers and writers alike from Feb. 20-22 as the Malahat Review hosts WordsThaw 2014, the second-annual spring symposium put on by UVic’s renowned literary quarterly. Participants will mingle, learn and delight alongside 38 featured poets, novelists, short-story writers and journalists from Victoria and beyond.
Leach leads Tech & Society program
The Ring
Considering how technology has impacted the publishing world, it’s no surprise that Department of Writing professor David Leach has been named the new director of the Technology and Society program. “Because it’s an interdisciplinary minor, we almost need a ringmaster who’s not necessarily an expert in every area but is comfortable making those connections,” says Leach. “My journalistic background helps, having seen how digital technologies transformed the music industry and is currently transforming journalism and publishing.”
UVic spreading great ideas via TEDX
The Ring
Several University of Victoria faculty members and students were featured at two TED events last month: TEDxVictoria and TEDxYouthDay. The first event included presentations on biological hackerspaces, rogue wave theory, and the evolution of storytelling. The second event was part of an annual series happening all around the world on Universal Children’s Day.
David Leach: New Book
The Ring
David Leach (writing) launches his first book this month, entitled Fatal Tide: When the Race of a Lifetime Goes Wrong. The creative non-fiction novel explores the causes and consequences of a fatal kayaking accident on the Bay of Fundy, the rise of extreme sports and reality TV, the psychology of risk-taking in the outdoors and other topics. Despite its Maritimes focus, there are UVic connections: Dr John Hayward, professor emeritus in biology and for years one of the leading researchers into hypothermia, appears in the book, as his work helped Leach crack the final mystery of exactly how and why the young man died.
