Senate
Bridging divides in wake of COVID-19
Media release
UVic and the Senate of Canada will co-host a forum this fall to help generate solutions to some of the world’s most divisive problems, some of which have been created and exacerbated by COVID-19.
Newly elected to Senate
The Ring
Four University of Victoria senators were elected by members of the UVic convocation in voting that took place between June 13 and June 27. Elected to a three-year term commencing Jan. 1, 2012 are: Nav Bassi (UVic Systems), Linda Hannah (MA’87, PhD’06), Robbyn Lanning (nursing), Cathy Whitehead McIntyre (MBA’98). Voting results.
Senate Election
The Ring
Sixteen members of the university convocation have been nominated for four vacancies on the UVic Senate. Electronic voting among convocation members, via webvote.uvic.ca, will be conducted by the University Secretary’s office starting June 13 and closing on June 27 at 4:30 p.m. The winning candidates will be elected to three-year terms that begin Jan. 1. Convocation members include alumni, past and present members of senate and the board of governors, regular and retired faculty members, regular staff members holding a university degree who have been employed at UVic for at least 12 months, and former Victoria College students who completed a full year of studies before 1963.
Senate nominations sought
The Ring
Nominations are invited for four positions on the UVic Senate, elected by the university convocation, for three-year terms starting Jan. 1, 2012. Convocation members include alumni, past and present members of senate and the board of governors, regular and retired faculty members, regular staff members holding a university degree who have been employed at UVic for at least 12 months, and graduates of Victoria College who completed a full year of studies before 1963. Forms are online at uvic.ca/universitysecretary. Nominations close May 16. If more than four nominations are received, an election by WebVote will be held be from June 13 to 27.
Senate motion on diversity
The Ring
UVic’s Senate reaffirmed the university’s commitment to diversity and equity in a motion passed at the Senate’s Feb. 4 meeting. The action followed a wide-ranging discussion of a motion presented by graduate student senate member Gordon Ruby in response to a high profile article “’Too Asian’?” in Maclean’s university rankings issue last year; the article was subsequently retitled on the web to “The Enrollment Controversy.”
Changes to senate appeals process
The Ring
The senate recently approved several significant changes to the Senate Committee on Appeals’ terms of reference and procedural guidelines. The changes are intended to strengthen and improve the student appeal process. The time limit for students to file an appeal before the Senate Committee on Appeals will change from six months to two months effective July 1, 2009. Faculty members, staff and students are encouraged to visit the website of the University Secretary at http://web.uvic.ca/univsec/ for full details of the changes.
