New phase for student financial aid

- University of Victoria

UVic continues to support students in a time of need. As the academic community moves into summer session and plans for the 2020/21 academic year, the university is transitioning into a second phase of support for students through existing bursaries and awards. The university has made significant financial enhancements to these programs to meet continuing needs for assistance.

The COVID-19 Support Bursary has received applications from more than 3,287 undergraduate and graduate students. Since this first phase of financial support was established in April to meet the immediate challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, UVic’s COVID-19 Support Bursary has provided more than $1,005,492 in student aid.

As UVic moves into the second phase of continuing support for students, financial benefits will transition from the support bursary to the university’s general bursary programs and international bursary programs, which are supported by the university and continuing fund-raising efforts. As of Monday, June 1, 2020, at 4 p.m., students who would have previously applied for the COVID-19 support bursary, may apply for the general bursary program.

Now that federal  and provincial COVID-19 student support programs are also in place, please be advised that all bursary requests after June 1 will be made through the general bursary program or the international bursary program. The transition should speed up the awards process.

UVic undergraduate and graduate students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents registered in the May to August term of study are invited to apply for the general bursary program. The application deadline is extended to June 8. For the 2020/21 academic year, domestic students can apply for the winter session general bursary program starting on August 14.

International students who experience financial crisis during their school year are also eligible to apply for bursary assistance. All applicants are asked to email finaid@uvic.ca detailing their extenuating circumstances.

UVic also continues to support urgent needs through Student Awards and Financial Aid assistance.
